Canada's Commercial Seal Hunt a Disgrace

Dear leaders,

As a proud Atlantic Canadian, I write to you today in hopes that you will seriously attend to Canada's shameful commercial seal hunt in a most profound way. Please help these off-season fishing communities by engaging them in alternate money making strategies, buy back their licenses, and support eco-tourism in those areas faced with low income or unemployment. To be sure, I would like to see the end of the commercial fishing industry as well. I am for the abolition of the property status of animals.

I have been affected by documentary images of the slaughter and statements made by the killers themselves. It strikes my heavy heart hardest to see them, one by one and generations long, admit that they wish they hadn't done it or that they didn't have to do it.

History proves to us time and time again that sometimes the law is unjust and therefore
unworthy of our tolerance. That some traditions were designed to teach us how to overcome so that everyone may benefit from a civil society. I am asking you today, in utter humility, to take a firm stand against the ruthless exploitation of animals all over the world and particularly now, the Canadian Harp seal.

Consider: "Humans -who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals- have had an understandable penchant for pretending animals do not feel pain. A sharp distinction between humans and animals is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear them, eat them -without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret. It is unseemly of us, who often behave so unfeelingly toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer. The behavior of other animals renders such pretensions specious. They are just too much like us." Dr. Carl Sagan and Dr. Ann Druyan, authors of Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors 1992

Dear Environment Minister John Gormley:

I am writing to thank you for the decisive stance you have taken to support a ban on seal products within the European Union.

As president of the Atlantic Canadian Anti-Sealing Coalition, I represent Canadians living in the very region the killing occurs who are vehemently opposed to the slaughter on the basis it is inherently inhumane, ecologically irresponsible and economically unnecessary.

I have personally witnessed the commercial killing of seals in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for the past three years and can attest to the horrific cruelty meted out to seal pups of just a few weeks of age by men wielding wooden bats, hakapiks and rifles. Sealers routinely violate Marine Mammal Regulations and Canada's Department of Fisheries and
Oceans consistently fails to act while attempting to convince the international community that Canada's commercial seal hunt is "closely monitored", "tightly regulated"
and "humanely conducted".

Despite the fact the majority of Canadians oppose the cruel and unnecessary commercial seal hunt, their tax dollars are used to subsidize the annual slaughter.... Read More

Your decision to support a ban on seal products within the European Union is warmly welcomed by the majority of Canadians. Once again, thank you.

Dear Senator Cools

Dear Ms Cools,

I am writing this email to ask for your assistance in supporting Senator Mac Harb’s private members bill to end the commercial seal hunt. I think it is deplorable that this archaic, cruel, inhumane & needless killing is allowed to continue. First & foremost I am ashamed that our country has not taken action to ban the seal hunt. What is happening to our country where we once stood proud and fought against the injustices in the world? I have never thought of Canada as promoting cruelty and yet that is what we are doing by allowing the seal hunt to continue. With our environment and the circle of life within it, in such a precarious state, I beg of you to help stop the monstrosities of this killing spree.

I keep hearing that the seal hunt is traditional and that is why it is allowed. However I question why our government doesn’t take the millions of dollars they spend on promoting this cruel slaughter of innocent animals and instead using it to create jobs & re-train the people from Newfoundland to sustain themselves in humane ways. Many countries in the European Union are working towards banning importing the seal skins and I understand there is already such a surplus that the skins are being burned. How

As a Canadian I have always been so proud of our “goodness” in the way we help other nations. The animals in our country deserve the same recognician and protection. Please help Canada become a country that can take appropriate action to do what is right.

I truly hope you can find it in your heart to be the voice for these innocent seals and give your support to end the seal hunt and finally stop the slaughter.

Thank you.

Dear Senator Lorna Milne

Dear Senator Lorna Milne,

I am not sure in this life why some people are able to peer into the depths of humanity and see a soul. To see love. To see something tangible there. And I am not sure why others turn towards the manipulations of words and their self righteous reasons. When I see an animal. I peer very deeply into their hearts and I see such amazing humanity there.

When I peer into the words of this automated message, I see a heartless cruel woman.
And once again I know these innocent lovely beings full of compassion, full of tears and full of love are at the mercy of people such as you. This breaks my heart. No it shatters it. There is nothing close to the horror that our animals suffer at the likes of your hands. I can only hope there is an after life where each person such as yourself will answer to a God who loves animals as deeply as I do. May the cold icy heart of your frozen self be one day broken through.

Dear Senator Elaine McCoy

Dear Senator Elaine McCoy,

Thank you very much for your response to my email. I have taken the time to go through your website at Hullabaloos as well as your profile page in the Senate Directory. The fact that you have created a website with a blog to inform the public about Senate activity is a very progressive act. Your Senate speech on "You Tube" indicates you are a creative person with new ideas and a willingness to encounter change as well as to encourage your Senate associates to push the boundaries of their Senate role.

I am not sure where you stand personally on the Canadian seal hunt, but I can tell you that as an outsider the Senate appears to be a group of individuals who vehemently oppose the end of the Seal Hunt. Politically I can imagine taking a stand against the Senate would seem daunting. My personal responses from Senators was very disappointing. In addition I have heard that one person received a threat for sending emails supporting the Harb Seal Bill. The topic of the hunt in senate must be extremely volatile.

I can imagine that taking a stand in the Senate would be intimidating for any person. However, I am asking you, begging you to do just this, to take a stand along side Senator Harb in two days time for the seconding of his proposed bill.

I am writing to you as a woman who cares deeply about this earth and as a person who respects all sentient beings.
This seal hunt affects me personally and deeply. I have had to put aside every part of my life to fight for the end of this slaughter. Little else matters as I watch (if the DFO permits) and know that these lives are being taken in the beginning of their lives. It is as though the divine hands of God have delivered these beautiful beings onto our Earth and the first thing they experience is a human being violently destroying them. If possible I would give my own life to save theirs. But I know it would matter little and the hunt would still continue.

If you can find it in your heart tomorrow to stand up for these very precious and innocent beings, there are no words to describe the elation and hope that I would feel.

If you could find the courage to face these Senators who care not for this Earth and all sentient beings I could begin to live again. I do not want to fight my own Country every day. I want to draw, to work, paint and to love.

Please Stand Tall with Senator Harb Tomorrow.
He is the first person who has given me a twinge of hope for my country.

Thank you,
Amanda Daniell
